Joe Slovo Daycare Center & Vegetable Garden

Members of the Joe Slovo community, an informal settlement in the Langa township in Cape Town, have come together to start two important project in their community.

The Joe Slovo Daycare Center (more commonly known as Masakhane Community Creche), was started by three women from the community to help take care of babies and young children in the area. It is one of the only daycare centers in the community of over 10,000 people and operates out of a large shack-like structure donated by the community.

The other project run by community members is the Joe Slovo community vegetable garden which grows an assortment of organic vegetables including spinach, corn, lettuce, potato and beetroot.
