Bathandwa Day and Night Care Centre
Bathandwa Day and Night Care Centre was founded by Mrs Virginia and
Mr Oliver Simelela in 2000. Bathandwa translated means 'to be loved'.
When a relative was stabbed to death by her partner, their young child
was left orphaned and destitute to wander the streets of Khayelitsha.
Virginia's love for children inspired her to take in the child. Soon
other members of the community and social workers of the Western Cape
Department of Social Development were referring more abandoned and/or
orphaned children to her home.
Today, 15 years later, Bathandwa is situated in Mandela Park in
Khayelitsha. The home provides full time shelter for the children,
food, cloths and education. CHOSA works with Bathandwa on capacity-building measures and helps them to fundraise.
